The King Shepherd

The King Shepherd was created in the United States from crossing several breeds. American bred German Shepherd Dogs were mated with Alaskan Malamutes or another similiar-typed breed (possibly the Great Pyrenees), and then the offspring were bred to German Shepherd Dogs of European lines. The result was a breed that was very similar to the German Shepherd Dog, however larger and more strongly built.

Males should be 27-29 inches tall. The minimum weight is 100, however the ideal weight is 120-145 pounds. Females should be 25-27 inches tall and weigh no less than 80 pounds, however 90-110 pounds is preferred. Larger dogs are more desirable.

The King Shepherd coat can be coarse or longhaired. They can be various colors including sable, bi-colored (mainly black with red/tan or cream), black saddle with red, tan, gold, creame, or silver markings, or they can be solid black or solid white.

King Shepherds are not hyper or aggressive dogs. They tend to have a sound temperament, and are fairly aloof with strangers. They are highly trainable and do very well in working conditions-obedience, personal protection dogs, search and rescue, etc.

The main health concern with the King Shepherd is hip dysplasia. This is a common problem in the majority of large breed dogs. To help reduce the risk of your puppy having this, be sure to buy your puppy from a breeder who tests their dogs for hip issues prior to breeding.

The King Shepherd does shed- they have two coat types and both types shed. To help keep your home free of hair, a thorough brushing a couple times a week should do the trick. Check the nails weekly to see if they need clipped, and always check the ears to see if there in need of cleaning.
