Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex Spaniel was among the first ten breeds to be recognized and admitted to the Stud Book when the American Kennel Club was formed in 1884. Prior to that there were specimens of the breed competing in the Crystal Palace show of 1862.

The Sussex Spaniel gets his name from Sussex, England where the first of this breed belonged to a Mr. Fuller. He was the one who developed the rich golden liver color that distinguishes this breed from others. Phineas Bullock also did notable work in furthering the best interests of the Sussex.

In the early days, the Sussex was used for certain types of rough shooting in England where there was a great deal of game combined with the custom of hunting on foot. The Sussex was a good sporting companion, though they don't have the speed of the Springer or Cocker Spaniel. This is why the Sussex has not been imported to the United States to the extent of the other breeds.

The Sussex Spaniel is a determined hunter, has an extremely good nose, and is an excellent retriever. They should be 13 to 15 inches tall and weigh 35 to 45 pounds. Their coat can only be one color-rich golden liver. Despite their serious expression on their faces, they are very friendly and have a very cheerful disposition.
