The Thai Ridgeback
![]() Urban Legends Thai Ridgeback Dogs |
Until recently the Thai Ridgeback was relatively unknown outside of eastern Thailand and is very rare elsewhere. This breed is a good watchdog, guard dog and hunting dog, but also makes a lovely companion. Tough and active with excellent jumping ability. It is a very active and alert dog but also a bit aloof towards strangers. The Thai Ridgeback needs an owner who understands the breed, and is able to handle the training of the breed. A Thai who is poorly raised can be aggressive so they require an owner who is able to put in time to properly work with the dog.
The Thai Ridgeback is a medium-sized pariah-type dog, with a wedge-shaped head, prick ears, and a short, smooth coat. The length of body from point of buttocks to point of sternum is about 10 percent longer than the height measured at the withers. The depth of chest is equal to the length of the foreleg. The tail is carried vertically or curved like a sickle.
This breed is characterized by a ridge of hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat (as witht he Rhodesian Ridgeback). This ridge starts at the withers and extends down the spine to the top of the pelvis bones.
The coat is short and smooth, with a ridge of hair growing in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat extending down the spine from the withers to the pelvis bones. The ridge should be clearly defined, tapering, and symmetrical. A narrow ridge is preferred. The following solid colors are permitted: light chestnut red (the deeper the better); black, silver and blue.
The desirable height for a mature Thai Ridgeback male is 24-26 inches and 22-24 inches for a female. Weight should be in proportion to the height.
The Thai Ridgeback will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They prefer warm climates and cannot withstand the cold.
